Bogotá, Columbia: La Perla

The reason I started Musical Passport was to highlight my favorite kind of music– music that blended contemporary and traditional or folk elements from around the globe. No one has yet done it better than La Perla.

I was introduced to La Perla at a small music festival in Miami called The Groundup Fest. It’s a tiny festival of music for musicians. All weekend they hyped up their “surprise show.” I had zero idea who would be coming to the stage as the surprise act. When it was finally time, and La Perla took the stage– they captivated the entire audience in less than one minute. This group BLEW me away, and was the highlight of the festival for literally everyone I spoke to.

When you listen to La Perla’s music you’ll hear cumbia, bullerengue, champeta, merengue and traditional instruments- but you’ll also hear beatbox and some seriously impressive rap. Formed in 2017, La Perla is a relatively new group but I think they’re going to be around a while. They are talented and absolutely magnetic on stage.
